The three strong positive correlations in the first row are the within-YRBSS coupling: the framework's need_value (state-level sad/hopeless 2+ wks among grades 9-12) is a strong cross-sectional proxy for state-level YRBSS suicide ideation, planning, and attempts (r > +0.75 across 30+ states). This validates the framework's choice of need metric.
The third row (access_value) is the headline non-protective signal: state-level youth-serving provider density is essentially uncorrelated with mortality outcomes, and modestly positively correlated with drug overdose (deaths-of-despair signature).
The fifth row (residual_z, the framework's central output) is orthogonal to mortality (r ≈ −0.30 to −0.05). The framework's residual captures workforce-capacity-gap-relative-to-coverage — not mortality risk.
