Price dispersion is massive. Active carbon prices today span from ~$2/tCO2e (Indonesia, Japan GX-ETS early phase) to $75/tCO2e (EU ETS). Same tonne, 37x price differential based solely on jurisdiction.
Equinor carries the highest declared carbon cost of any oil major surveyed: $2.2 billion in 2023 — ~80% of its Norwegian upstream emissions priced via the Norwegian CO2 tax plus EU ETS.
TotalEnergies paid €853M ($925M) in EU ETS allowance purchases in 2023. Shell $779M. BP $600M. The magnitude of EU-ETS-priced carbon for European majors is already at the scale of corporate venture-capital budgets.
